Demet Sabancı Çetindoğan:
Demet Sabancı Çetindoğan, the daughter of Özcan Sabancı and the late Hacı Sabancı
was born in 1965 in Adana, Turkey. She always reflected the characteristics of her
homeland in her daily life. After completing her secondary education in Adana, she
studied Business Administration in Richmond College in London. Upon returning to
Turkey, she took part in her family’s textile investments, in which she always had
a keen interest since her childhood.
Demet Sabancı Çetindoğan's first stop in Sabancı textile business was TEKSA A.Ş.
where she started working in 1988. She worked as Marketing Manager between 1988
and 1992 and Assistant General Manager until 1995. Later that year, she started
to work BOSSA T.A.Ş., the first industrial enterprise of Sabancı family. At BOSSA,
she worked as Assistant General Manager of the Towel and Velvet Division, and Supply
Director between 1995 and 2003. She was a Board Member of both BOSSA T.A.Ş. and
YÜNSA A.Ş between 2003 and 2008.
Her career as an entrepreneur started in 1999 with DEMSA A.Ş., the textile retail
company she founded in partnership with her husband, Cengiz Çetindoğan. The company's
first cooperation was with the well-known mother and children brand Mothercare.
Demsa continued its progress by bringing brands and designers such as Tom Ford,
Salvatore Ferragamo, DVF, Elie Tahari, Longchamp, Juicy Couture,Agent Provocateur,
Pal Zileri, Jo Malone, Michael Kors, Gerard Darel, Michael Kors, Kurt Geiger, Guess,
Laura Ashley, Charles&Keith, Mothercare-ELC to consumers in Turkey and setting up
its own brand, “Brandroom”. DEMSA also operates the famous British retail chain
Harvey Nichols in Turkey and receives high acclaim with its distinctive, stylish
stores. DEMSA A.Ş. is still active throughout Turkey with 108 shops and 900 employees.
Sabancı Çetindoğan continued her entrepreneurship career by founding MEDIASA Yayıncılık
A.Ş. (MediaSa Publishing) in 2006. Aiming to specialize on thematic channels, MEDIASA
started operation by obtaining the broadcast rights of Fashion TV in Turkey. Shortly
afterwards, the company started putting forth the quarterly lifestyle magazine Fashion
TV magazine, which has a special spot among Turkish fashion magazines with its chic
design, content and readership. In 2007, ZTV Bilgi was launched in order to provide
‘equal opportunity’ in education. The first youth and educational channel in Turkey,
ZTV Bilgi is a major resource for students, especially underprivileged youth, preparing
for life-changing standardised exams such as YGS (Entrance Examination for Higher
Education), LYS (Placement Examination for Higher Education), SBS (Entrance Examination
for Highscool) , KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Examination) PMYO (Police Vocational
School) or in need of repeating the subjects taught in school and follow the distance
education courses. The content of the channel, prepared by skilled educationalists,
was further augmented in 2006 through a protocol signed with Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı
(Turkish National Ministry of Education), dictating that the content produced by
distance education institutions such as Open Highschool and Open University will
be broadcast on TV free of charge.
In 2011, Turkey’s first travel and tourism television ‘WORLD TRAVEL CHANNEL’ was
launched with the leadership of Mrs. Çetindoğan. World Travel Channel contributes
to local as well as international tourism industry.
In early 2012, Mediasa and South Korean conglomerate CJ O Shopping entered a joint
venture agreement to start an on line business consisting of shopping television,
B to C on line retailer and mobile shopping. This new venture started its operations
in December 0f 2012.
Currently the President of the Executive Boards of channels within MEDIASA, Demet
Sabancı Çetindoğan is also the Vice President of the Board Directors of DEMSA A.Ş.
In addition, she undertook the position of President of the Board of Directors of
ONKIM, the stem cell research company she founded in 2006 and the position of Vice
President of the Board of Directors of DENSA Deniz Taşımacılık (Densa Sea Transportation)
which she founded in 2008 and finally Demet Sabancı Çetindoğan, by November 2012
as the new owner of Pera Palace Hotel. The Hotel was opened to welcome guests of
Orient Express in 1892. Pera Palace Hotel is the historical Ottoman palaces, the
first electricity is given, the first electric elevator and the building where the
hot water first flows.
ONKIM is a research firm qualified to give R&D support to local and international
companies and fulfills the GMP (Good Manufacture Practice) conditions. In January
2010, ONKIM signed an agreement with Anthro Kinetics to start producing autologous
DENSA is an international maritime transportation firm founded in partnership with
Demet Sabancı Çetindoğan’s older brother Ömer Sabancı. Currently the company is
in possession of a fleet of 1.5 million deadweight ton, consisting of 20 carriers.
She is working to found a museum containing the choice works of Turkish art. The
museum building is going to be designed by internationally acclaimed architect Zaha
Hadid, which will be in Golden Horn, in Istanbul
As an individual aware of her social responsibility, Demet Sabancı Çetindoğan was
presented with plaques and awards in thanks to her work by many organizations and
foundations such as Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi (Mimar Sinan University), Unicef Türkiye
Milli Komitesi (Unicef Turkish National Commitee), Başbakanlık Çocuk Esirgeme Kurumu
(Turkish Prime Ministry Child Protection Agency), TOÇEV (Tuvana Foundation For Educating
Children) and many times she was elected as the business woman of the year from
different associations. She's married to businessman Cengiz Çetindoğan and has three
children. Sabancı Çetindoğan is currently the President of the High Advisory Board
of TİKAD (Turkish Businesswomen Association), President of Executive Council of
YÇD (Creative Children's Association) and a member of WAAS ( The World Academy of
Art and Science), Founding Member of Social Aid and Solidarity Foundation, Chaîne
des Rôtisseurs Association Mondiale de la Gastronomie
Sabancı Çetindoğan aims to continue her innovative investments, while focusing on
benefits of her country and the society.
